Haunts - Mayfly (2020) EN

The British project projekt Haunts is one of those post-rock bands that it's not super loud about while it definitely should be. That's what I thought three years ago when I posted about their debut EP A Lack of Empathy and that's exactly what I think now when they released another one, called Mayfly.

The instrumental line up of the band includes not only guitars but also saxophone, violins and cello, what's more, the compositions are so artsy and guitars not pushy so the band's music can safely be called chamber/art post-rock. A lot of neoclassicism, moody fragments (fantastic in Eyes Wide), melancholy. This is no post-rock to headbang and inspire monumental awe but one to contemplate during a rainy day.

In Where We Divide the artists make the pace faster and thanks to the saxophone, their music soundss more and more jazzy. And the further into the album, the more surprises with some electronics and atmospheric post-rock for example.

Brytyjski projekt Haunts to jeden z tych post-rockowych zespołów, o których nie jest głośno, a zdecydowanie powinno być. Takie miałem wrażenie trzy lata temu, gdy pisałem o ich debiutanckiej EP-ce A Lack of Empathy i tak samo myślę teraz, gdy wydali kolejną, zatytułowaną Mayfly.

W instrumentalny skład zespołu wchodzą nie tylko gitary ale również saksofon, skrzypce i wiolonczela, a że przy okazji kompozycje są bardzo artsy, a gitary w żaden sposób nie zawłaszczają sobie czołowych ról, muzyka na EP-ce mogłaby być określona jako chamber/art post-rock. Sporo neoklasyki, spokojna, nastrojowe fragmenty (fantastyczne w Eyes Wide), melancholia. To nie jest post-rock do headbangowania i podniebnych zachwytów, a taki do kontemplacji deszczowego dnia.

W Where We Divide artyści podkręcają tempo, a dzięki obecności saksofonu ich muzyka brzmi coraz bardziej jazzowo. A im dalej w płytę tym więcej niespodzianek z drobną elektroniką i nastrojowym post-rockiem na czele.

Haunts is a London-based project offering something more than just post-rock music. Their instrumental sound is complex and well-crafted like a crazy classical masterpiece. They have their own unique mood that gets to you although there is not much music on their new EP.

It is only three tracks. "Creep Pulse" is exactly that - coloured with a high dose of distress song based on mind-digging pulsating background. Even when the mood is smoothed by violin, there still this omnipotent feeling that something is not right. Perhaps it's the keys sounding like church bells?

"No Glory, No Steam, No Fire" is a poem enriched with spoken vocals, about how, despite what we think about ourselves, non-special we are. The most interesting part is how the pace changes in the middle of the track. The album is finished by "Crux" - long and filled with atmosphere-building strings and delicate sadness. Just like the whole album, it shows this slightly different approach to post-rock.

Haunts to londyński projekt, który oferuje coś więcej niż post-rock. Ich instrumentalna muzyka wydaje się być bardzo złożona, dopracowana, niczym szalone muzyczne arcydzieło. Jednak do tego ma swoją niepowtarzalną atmosferę udzielającą się mimo niewielkiej ilości materiału.

Płyta to bowiem tylko trzy kawałki. "Creep Pulse" jest właśnie tym - zabarwionym solidną dawką niepokoju utworem bazującym na wbijającym się w głowę pulsującym tle. Nawet, gdy nastrój łagodzą nieco skrzypce, wciąż nie można otrząsnąć się z wrażenia, że coś jest nie tak. Może to te klawisze, które brzmią jak dzwony? 

"No Glory, No Steam, No Fire" to wzbogacony mówionym tekstem poemat o tym jak, wbrew temu co sami o sobie myślimy, niewyjątkowi jesteśmy. Mocnym punktem jest nagła zmiana nastroju w środku utworu. Płytę zamyka "Crux" - długi, pełen nastrojowych smyczków i łagodnego smutku. Tak jak cała płyta pokazujący trochę inne podejście do post-rocka.

"A Lack of Empathy" można mieć za ile zdecydujesz się zapłacić.
