The Hills Mover - Before the Wind (2020) EN

Grégoire Fray is mostly known as the vocalist and energetic leader of the post-rocking THOT. Meanwhile his solo works constitute something entirely different: industrial/gothic singer-songwriter who when going to have a tour around Europe brings with himself only a hoodie and a guitar. Before he went for the next one, he released an EP called Before the Wind.

Four tracks well reflect the spirit of his music - moody vocals, sometimes deep, sometimes high-pitched, pulsating industrial backgrounds and tons of atmosphere. It comes partly from his music, partly from the overall image Fray creates around himself. It can't be underappreciate how melodic his songs are - the pulsating The March of the Seeds, very catchy Silver Sleep with its mighty but also tamed basses in the backgrounds or finally the very dark Before the Wind.

The musician has just started the already mentioned tour in which he'll visit countries from Belgium through Poland up to Petersburg in Russia.

Tymczasem jego solowa twórczość to zupełnie inna bajka: industrialno-gotycki singer-songwriter, który w trasę po Europie bierze tylko bluzę z kapturem i gitarę. Przed kolejną wydał EP-kę zatytułowaną Before the Wind.

Cztery kawałki dobrze oddają ducha jego muzyki - nastrojowy wokal, raz głęboki, raz wysoki, pulsujące, nieco industrialne podkłady, a do tego mnóstwo klimatu. Po części wynika on z muzyki, po części z ogólnego wrażenia roztaczanego przez Fraja. Nie można nie docenić również tego jak melodyjne są jego kawałki - pulsujący The March of the Seeds, wpadający w ucho Silver Sleep z jego potężnym, ale okiełznanym basem w tłach czy bardzo mroczny tytułowy Before the Wind.

Muzyk rusza właśnie w nadmienioną wcześniej trasę po Europie Środkowej i Wschodniej. Z koncertami we Wrocławiu, Krakowie, Warszawie i Białymstoku.

Lief Sjostrom - The Longest Night (2018) EN

Lief Sjostrom is "a cellist, guitarist, composer, and teacher" from Colorado. This Christmas he released and album that perfectly, in my opinion, reflects the atmosphere of the long, cold night when the miracle was supposed to happen.

While I am not a fan of Christmas-themed concept album, I can't just miss this super dense ambiance of Sjostrom's short release. The Longest Night is made of six compositions played mostly on the cello with all of its richness with dark tones, melancholic bow and rhythm tapping on its body. The artist deals with more or less famous American carols with the most famous (at least in Europe) being Silent Night. This one is even more delicate and even darker than other mainstream versions.

And this is the way to perform Christmas carols I understand.

Lief Sjostrom to "wiolonczelista, gitarzysta, kompozytor i nauczyciel" z Kolorado. Na Święta wydał płytę, która, moim zdaniem, najlepiej oddaje klimat długiej, zimowej nocy, kiedy miał zdarzyć się cud.

O ile nie jestem zwolennikiem tematycznych albumów świątecznych to obok tak gęstej atmosfery, jaka panuje na niedługim krążku Sjostroma nie mogłem przejść obojętnie. The Longest Night to sześć kompozycji zagranych wyłącznie na wiolonczeli z całym jej bogactwem: mrocznymi tonami, melancholijnymi pociągnięciami smyczka, wybijaniem rytmu o pudło. Artysta wziął na warsztat mniej lub bardziej znane amerykańskie kolędy, z których najbliższą wszystkim będzie z pewnością Cicha noc. Ta jest jeszcze spokojniejsza i jeszcze mroczniejsza niż bardziej mainstreamowe wersje.

I takie wykonanie kolęd to ja rozumiem.

The Stolen Orchestra - The Sounds of the Stolen Orchestra (2018) EN

Matty Sievers comes from Melbourne and creates music as The Stolen Orchestra. His atmospheric music which he describes as "beautiful sounds of an ugly world" has been just released on an album fittingly called The Sounds of the Stolen Orchestra.

It is "an EP for those days that never seem to end that you wish you could forget" which in practice means some heavy atmosphere but also beautifully sad sounds. A thick layer of an electronic background on which neoclassical/minimalist compositions are played with piano keys and strings. The album begins calmly but the synth wave rises with every minute to reach its peak in the first seconds of What Happened and What's Going On, the most interesting track that enriches the album with some fast pace and dynamics.

Matty Sievers pochodzi z Melbourne i tworzy jako The Stolen Orchestra. Jego nastrojowa muzyka, którą określa jako "piękne dźwięki dla paskudnego świata" ukazała się ostatnio na płycie zatytułowanej odpowiednio The Sounds of the Stolen Orchestra.

Jest to "EP-ka na dni, które zdają się nie kończyć i które chciałbyś móc zapomnieć", co w praktyce oznacza ciężki nastrój ale też pięknie smutne dźwieki. Gruba warstwa elektronicznego backgroundu, na której rozbrzmiewają neoklasyczne/minimalistyczne kompozycje na pianino i smyczki. Album zaczyna się bardzo spokojnie, ale fala synthu narasta z jego biegiem by osiągnać szczyt w pierwszych sekundach What Happened and What's Going On, najciekawszego zresztą utworu dodający albumowi dynamiki i tempa.

Rives - Mappa Mundi (2018) EN

The French of Rives released recently their debut EP called Mappa Mundi showing the best side of their music. This a bit darker and not very hasty guitar post-rock puts the band within the group that should draw attention of the audience in the times to come.

One could say that Rives don't try to be uniquely extravagant: their musi is some classically guitar post-rock that sometimes is calmer and charming with its beauty and sometimes reaching the heights of grandeur filling the listeners' ears with breath-taking noise. It is also worth noticing the almost ambient-like fragments in Dérive azur in which the project's music turns into calming sea of guitar drone.

Probably the most interesting track here is  based on the pulsating rhythm of piano Il n'y a pas de ciel à voir, seulement du bleu that also brings some of the heavier yet still atmospheric loudness that finishes in the album's most powerful La terre dans nos yeux. Good stuff.

Francuzi z Rives wydali niedawno swój debiut, EP-ka Mappa Mundi pokazuje ich muzykę z jak najlepszej strony. Ten nieco mroczniejszy i niezbyt szybki gitarowy post-rock stawia zespół wśród projektów, którymi należy się w przyszłości interesować.

Można powiedzieć, że Rives nie silą się na oryginalną ekstrawagancję - ich muzyka to klasyka gitarowego instrumentalnego grania, które raz jest wolniejsze i zachwycające urodą, po to by za chwilę wspiąć się na wyżyny i wypełnić uszy słuchaczy zapierającym dech w piersiach hałasem. Warto zwrócić uwagę na momenty wręcz ambientowe w Dérive azur, w którym muzyka zespołu to dające wytchnienie morze gitarowego drone'u.

Najciekawiej brzmi za to chyba oparte na pulsującym rytmie pianinie Il n'y a pas de ciel à voir, seulement du bleu, które również zmienia się po chwili w mocniejsze, aczkolwiek wciąż bardzo nastrojowe uderzenie finiszujące w najgłośniejszym na płycie La terre dans nos yeux. Dobre.

Ciempiés - Oraciones (2018) EN

Ciempiés is a project by the Spanish artist Fran Düll that focuses on generating some guitar darkness. His new EP, Oraciones, comprises of three tracks sounding like a night stroll through a forest played with an atmospheric post-rock.

The album is started with probably the darkest here Pienso como otra persona, developing from depressive ambient towards crushing post-metal. The middle track, Ciudad transparente is basically a mini concert on piano keys while the last one, Laberinto de conexiones neuronales makes use of more traditional post-rock music based on nice, engaging riffs. This short album is surprisingly diverse and should be a good peek into the Spaniard's works.

Ciempiés to projekt hiszpańskiego artysty Frana Dülla skupiający się na generowaniu gitarowego mroku. Jego nowa EP-ka, Oraciones, to trzy kawałki brzmiące jak spacer przez las nocą, zagrany na nastrojowy post-rock. 

Płytę otwiera najmroczniejszy chyba Pienso como otra persona, który rozwija się od depresyjnego ambientu po przygniatający post-metal. Środkowe Ciudad transparente to mini koncert na pianinie, a ostatni utwór Laberinto de conexiones neuronales to już bardziej tradycyjny gitarowy post-rock oparty na ładnych i wciągających riffach. Ta krótka pyta jest nadspodziewanie zróżnicowana i powinna być dobrym wglądem w twórczość Hiszpana.

A Magnificent Cold - Nocturne (2018) EN

Sebastian Crugley best known as the driving force of the project called Alldrig has just released an album signed with his more nostalgic alias, A Magnificent Cold. "Nocturne" is filled with, obviously, night time music, neoclassical sounds with darker vibe.

The Argentinian created melancholy written with notes and poured it over the whole album.  The combination of piano keys and heavy sounding strings always sounds awesome, but Crugley added some of his magic that is audible on "Nocturne". Prepare tissues, turn off the lights and let this music/magic guide you.

A Magnificent Cold - Nocturne (2018) PL

Sebastian Crugley znany lepiej jako siła napędowa projektu Alldrig wydał właśnie płytę pod swoim bardziej nostalgicznym aliasem, A Magnificent Cold. "Nocturne" wypełniona jest oczywiście muzyką pasującą do nocnej pory, neoklasyką w jej mrocznej odmianie.

Argentyńczyk tworzy zapisaną nutami melancholię i wypełnił nią całą płytę. Połączenie klawiszy pianina i ciężko brzmiących smyczków zawsze brzmi dobrze, ale Crugley na swoim krążku naprawdę nimi czaruje. Trzeba więc przygotować sobie chusteczki, wyłączyć światło i dać się ponieść czarowi jego muzyki.

"Nocturne" można mieć za ile się chce.

Squid - Waves EP (2018) EN

Kuba Łakomy and Tomek Grządkowski began their project called Squid inspired by the soundtrack from Jim Jarmush's "Only Lovers Left Alive" (and it's so understandable). And so do the Wrocław based duet play their avant-garde rock drowned in a very dark atmosphere, bordering closely to post-rock music.

Their new EP, "Waves", confirms all of this. The tracks here are covered by delicate noise sometimes lined with fantastic keys and strings that make everything sound epic ("Suite in D minor"). From the second track, "Stranger", it gets more post-rock-like thanks to the not overwhelming presence of guitars. Unlike most of the music of the genre, the guitars not only don't deafen down the broad spectre of various sounds created by Squid but it even broadens it (as in the gracefully frolicking "Desert Sound").

Squid - Waves EP (2018) PL

Kuba Łakomy i Tomek Grządkowski zaczęli swój projekt Squid zafascynowani (i bardzo, bardzo słusznie) muzyką w filmie "Tylko kochankowie przeżyją" Jima Jarmusha. Duet z Wrocławia gra więc pogrążony w bardzo mrocznej atmosferze awangardowy rock bardzo ściśle graniczący z post-rockiem.

Ich nowa EP-ka, "Waves", wszystko to potwierdza. Utwory tutaj zanurzone są w delikatnym noise'ie gdzieniegdzie poprzetykanym fantastycznie brzmiącymi klawiszami i nadającymi podniosłego tonu smyczkami ("Suite in D minor"). Od drugiego na płycie "Stranger" jest już bardziej post-rockowo dzięki nienachalnej obecności gitar. Te nie tylko nie zagłuszają szerokiego spektrum różnych dźwięków kreowanych przez Squid ale wręcz je podkreślają (choćby tak jak w pląsającym "Desert Sound").

Jérémie Renoir - The Rock EP (2018) EN

Jérémie Renoir creates his music in Paris and has just released his debut EP. Apparently, the series of EPs is how he wants to communicate with his fans, rather with than longer releases. The Frenchman is compared to the biggest names with the likes of Björk, Leonard Cohen and David Lynch but what is more important, he shows so much of his own style that doesn't have to fear being labelled.

The most important aspect of Renoir's music is his voice. Low-pitched, full of tasty rustles and deep like a bottomless pit. Even when in some parts he's busy with climbing to higher pitches or even in charming backing vocals ("The Rock"), draws full attention of the listener. Although it is compared to voices of Cohen or Chet Faker, I think it is unique enough to attract fans as if it was a real life magnet.

The artist's music is mostly heavy sounding piano keys and delicate electronics humming in the background or setting up the rhythm. The latter, often quite unorthodoxically rhythmic, revokes the already mentioned Björk but to be honest, it's less experimental than the Icelander's latest works. It is the perfect balance between ambitious electronic music and pop catchiness.

Jérémie Renoir - The Rock EP (2018) PL

Jérémie Renoir tworzy w Paryżu i właśnie wydał debiutancką EP-kę, zgodnie z zapowiedziami, w taki właśnie sposób będzie porozumiewał się z fanami, omijając dłuższe wydawnictwa. Francuz porównywany jest do największych z Björk, Leonardem Cohenem i Davidem Lynchem na czele ale przede wszystkim pokazuje na tyle dużo własnego charakteru, że nie musi bać się zaszufladkowania.

Najważniejsze w muzyce Renoir jest zdecydowanie jego głos. Niski, pełen apetycznych szelestów i głęboki jak bezdenna studnia. Nawet, gdy miejscami zajęty jest wspinaczką w wyższe oktawy czy nawet w urokliwych chórkach ("The Rock") skupia na sobie całą uwagę słuchającego. Mimo porównań z Cohenem czy Chetem Fakerem, dla mnie jest wystarczająco oryginalny i wybijający się na tle obecnych wokali by sam w sobie przyciągać słuchaczy jak magnes.

Muzyka artysty to przede wszystkim ciężko brzmiące klawisze pianina i delikatna elektronika szumiąca lub wybijająca rytm w tle. Ta ostatnia, często nieortodoksyjnie rytmiczna przywołują na myśl wspomnianą Björk jednak jest mimo wszystko mniej eksperymentalna niż ostatnie dokonania Islandki. Jest idealną mieszanką ambitnej elektroniki z popową przebojowością.

Кроль - Тьма (2017) EN

Darkness is not only a title of the new album by the Russian project called Кроль, darkness is something that pours out of every note of their dark dreampop music. Aided by a range of musicians duo Olga "Jorgan" Roshtchina - Carl "Valerius" Renstalbaldanken serves something between folk and electronic dreampop in a very unnerving shape.

Кроль's music is a mixture of Roshtchina's mesmerizing vocal and super interesting blending of guitars and electronic music. And there's also this dark, slow atmosphere generated by beats and guitar noise polluting the backgrounds. Great effect is also created by cooperation with another vocalist, Julya Nakaryakova in "Как хорошо, что ты не здесь" that shows how easy it is for the artists to make catchy music pieces. But, together with lyrics ("So good you are not here") and dark instrument sounds, it aligns with the atmosphere of the rest of the album.

Another well done trick was to base "Огонь в поле плевел", which sounds like a folk lamentation, on the sound of Chinese folk instrument called hulu. The second part of the album is generally more folk-ish and for some reasons this blending of folk and modern music sounds as if they were born to accompany each other.

Mrok to nie tylko nazwa nowej płyty rosyjskiego projektu Кроль, mrok to coś, co wylewa się z każdej nuty tej dark dreampopowej muzyki. Wspomagany przez szereg muzyków duet Olga "Jorgan" Roszczina - Carl "Valerius" Renstalbaldanken serwuje coś pomiędzy folkiem a elektronicznym dreampopem w bardzo niepokojącej formie.

Muzyka Кроль to wypadkowa głębokiego, hipnotyzującego wokalu Roszcziny i bardzo ciekawej mieszaniny gitar i elektroniki. Do tego dochodzi mroczna, niespieszna atmosfera generowana przez miarowe bity i zanieczyszczające całość gitarowe tła. Znakomicie brzmi również współpraca z inną wokalistką, Julią Nakarjakową w "Как хорошо, что ты не здесь", który pokazuje łatwość komponowania przebojowych utworów muzyków formacji. Co z tego, skoro wraz z tekstem ("Jak dobrze, że cię tu nie ma") i mrocznym instrumentarium utwór wpasowuje się w atmosferę reszty albumu.

Kolejnym udanym posunięciem jest oparcie "Огонь в поле плевел", brzmiącego jak folkowy lament, na brzmieniu chińskiego ludowego instrumentu hulusi. W drugiej części płyty utwory generalnie mają bardziej folkowe zacięcie - i z jakichś powodów taka mieszanina muzyki ludowej i nowoczesnej brzmi jakby były one dla siebie stworzone.

Agura Matra - In Silence EP (2017) EN

Our good friend Ben Rammsier comes back with another album with his main project Agura Matra. Dark funeral electronic music from Indonesia is as atmospheric as it was at the beginning of last year, perhaps Rammsier's new music is a good omen for the incoming year?

This time his music is a little bit more lively and almost danceable. You can hardly stay still during the melodic "Runaway Toy" or dark-discotheque'ish (as the title suggests) "The Darkness Dance". As always though, the cosmic-electronic samples and keys sounding like church organs during the last goodbye sound perfect together with the artist's atmospheric voice. And create this combination that is so characteristic of the project. 

The dancing mood burns down after a while and it is replaced with songs even more atmospheric. But there's still the melody that is in the foreground, be it in the quiet as a stone grave "In Silence" or sparkling with electronic effects "Fear".

Agura Matra - In Silence EP (2017) PL

Nasz dobry znajomy Ben Rammsier powraca z kolejnym albumem projektu Agura Matra. Mroczna, funeralna elektronika z Indonezji jest równie klimatyczna jak była na początku zeszłego roku, być może nowa muzyka Rammsiera zimą zwiastuje dobry rok?

Tym razem jego muzyka jest nieco bardziej żywiołowa i niemal roztańczona. Trudno nie ruszać nogą do melodyjnego "Runaway Toy" czy mroczno-dyskotekowym (jak sam tytuł wskazuje) "The Darkness Dance". Jak zwykle jednak kosmiczno-elektroniczne sample i klawisze brzmiące jak organy przy ostatnim pożegnaniu znakomicie grają z niezwykle klimatycznym wokalem artysty. I tworzą ten charakterystyczny dla projektu mariaż.

Taneczny klimat wypala się po jakimś czasie i jego miejsce zajmują numery jeszcze bardziej klimatyczne. Zawsze jednak na pierwszym planie jest melodia, czy to w cichym jak kaplica "In Silence" czy roziskrzonym elektroniką "Fear".
