Battlestations - Memoirs of Once (2023)

As you can already tell, I'm a big fan of this mysterious project from Brussels. Their music can be called many things but orchestral ambient is probably the most interesting one of them. Their new take on the curious music is called Memoir of Once.

The Belgian artist(s) combine various genres into one coherent soundscape. There are long fragments of ambient beauty that slowly but surely becomes louder and louder until it reaches the level of almost-post-rock music. But there are also bits and pieces of dark ambient and sacral ambient (so great in The Disappeared) as well as full-blown electronica and neoclassicism. The whole thing is like a mystery for the audience to uncover bit by bit, note by note. This music has a lot of focus-inducing and self-reflective abilities, but it definitely can be actively enjoyed as well.

Battlestations - Inform (2020) EN

The Belgian Battlestations for me is one of the more mysterious and less appreciated projects of the European post-rock-slash-ambient map. And after the very well-done album Vixit it's time for their forth one called Inform.

The project's music is based on strings and keys but another important element are those more pugnacious moments that transform the whole thing into heavily industrial music that reminds me of those abandoned factories of the Western Europe. This atmosphere is present all over the album - if not occupying the foreground, than lurking in the nervous backgrounds like in Steeper Angles or another key-ambient masterpiece, L'abîme. Although this is definitely not so subtle music, the words quoted on their page say a lot about the project's nature: "If you listen for long enough, you don't know whether what you're hearing is silence, or whether there's some kind of underlying sound, in the distance..."

Belgijskie Battlestations to jak dla mnie jeden z bardziej tajemniczych i niedocenianych projektów na mapie europejskiego post-rocka przechodzącego w ambient. A tymczasem po bardzo udanej płycie Vixit nadszedł czas na czwarty już krążek zatytułowany Inform.

Muzyka projektu oparta jest w dużym stopniu na smyczkach i klawiszach, ale nie można zapomnieć o bardziej charakternych momentach zamieniających całość w mocno industrialne granie przywodzące na myśl opuszczone fabryki Europy Zachodniej. Ta atmosfera obecna jest w zasadzie w każdej chwili trwania albumu - jeśli nie na pierwszym planie to w niepokojących tłach jak w Steeper Angles czy innym ambientowo-klawiszowym arcydziełku, L'abîme. Co prawda nie jest to aż tak subtelna muzyka, ale słowa cytowane na oficjalnej stronie dużo mówią o naturze projektu: "Jeśli słuchasz wystarczająco długo, zaczynasz mieć wątpliwości czy słyszysz ciszę czy jakiś ukryty dźwięk gdzieś w oddali..."

Sometimes in music, pathos is not only hesitatingly accepted but indeed looked for. Battlestations from Belgium is not only 100% pathos (with capital P) but also pure wonder. Three monumental tracks and each of them is an atmosphere and epic symphony of its own. It couldn't be any other way as they are composed from strings, keys and elvish backing vocals.

"Vixit" is basically a movie soundtrack without the video component. But it's enough to close your eyes to visualize majestic pictures on your retina. Perhaps, as the project's name suggests, they would be connected to war (always in slo-mo) but perhaps that's up to us.

Czasem w muzyce patos jest nie tylko akceptowany ale i poszukiwany. Belgijskie Battlestations to stu procentowy patos oraz zachwyt w czystej postaci. Trzy monumentalne utwory, z których każdy jest sam w sobie symfonią nastrojowości i epickiej muzyki. Jak można powiedzieć inaczej, gdy składają się na nią i smyczki i elfickie chóry i klawisze pianina. 

"Vixit" to w zasadzie muzyka filmowa bez obrazu. Ale wystarczy zamknąć oczy i na siatkówce pojawiają się majestatyczne obrazy. Być może, jak sugeruje nazwa zespołu, związane z wojną (koniecznie w slow motion), być może zależą one tylko od nas.
