Skippy Spiral - Circuit Circus (2020) PL

Jedna z dziwaczniejszych rzeczy na moim blogu, Skippy Spiral to "a music clown & entertainer" z Savannah, a jego ostatni album, Circuit Circus, to prawdziwie punkowo-psychodeliczna mieszanka z akordeonem i cyrkiem na pierwszym planie.

Fascynacja cyrkiem do tej pory kojarzyła mi się bardziej z klimatycznymi i mrocznymi balladami The Irrepressibles, tymczasem Amerykanin to bardziej lo-fi'owa psychodeliczna jazda bez trzymanki. W opisie albumu na stronie wydawcy, przeczytać można, że w muzyce artysty "akordeon, keyboard i wokal charakterystyczny dla cyrkowego nawoływacza są akompaniowane muzyką przenikniętą..." i tu następuje prawdziwa litania gatunków muzycznych z punkiem, industrialem czy muzyką klezmerską. Żeby było jeszcze ciekawiej, Circuit Circus to concept album opowiadającym farsę/przypowieść o ludzkości uploadowanej do wirtualnej rzeczywistości.

Płyta składa się z wielu po punkowemu szybkich kawałków w bardzo lo-fi'owej estetyce. Kilka, jak Vicious Circle, Shadowish Puppetry czy Clownbot 3000 natychmiast zapadają w pamięć. Ten album to na pewno ciekawostka, ala taka, której muzyczna warstwa też się broni.

Skippy Spiral - Circuit Circus (2020) EN

This is one of the most peculiar things on my blog ever, Skippy Spiral is "a music clown & entertainer" from Savannah, and his newest album, Circuit Circus, makes a really punk-psychedelic mixture with accordion and circus on the foreground.

The fascination with circus up to this point in my mind was mostly about atmospheric and dark ballads by The Irrepressibles, that said, the American makes more like a lo-fi psychedelic joy ride. In the description featured on the label's Badcamp, you can read that in the artist's music "accordion/keyboard & carny barker style vocals is accompanied by original music that infuses..." and then there goes an impressive list of music genres with for example punk, industrial or klezmer. To make everything even more interesting, Circuit Circus is a concept album telling a farce/parable about the humankind uploaded to artificial reality.

The album consists of the lot of punkishly fast songs in a borderline lo-fi style. Some, such as Vicious Circle, Shadowish Puppetry or Clownbot 3000 instantly make their way to the listener's mind. This album is definitely a fun fact, but also one the musical layer of which is worth checking out too.

Mirny Mine - Live at Visby Cathedral (2020 EN

I'm not that much into live music albums (mostly because of the sound quality tbh) and so there has never been any on my blog/ But it's different with those gothic-sensitive artists having gig in churches. It's different with those who are compared to Anna von Hausswolff. It's different with Mirny Mine who released recently an album Live at Visby Cathedral.

Indeed, a cathedral-based concert (not to mention the accompaniment by the Visby choir) fits this kind of music best. Mirny Mine, or in real life Anna Sundström, just like her more famous compatriot, makes an inspired gothic and dark pop, a real "cinematic journey into the darker parts of dream pop". Everything here is very dark, soaking with Scandinavian aesthetics, the artist's vocals sometimes sound like unnerving whispers (so beautiful in Wolf), sometimes it's spoken word, sometimes very on-point and majestic.

On the musical layer, it's dominated by monumental drums sounding like timpani that strike the stable, never hurrying pace. To top that, there are also guitars, occasionally more wheezing than not But everything is slightly different in the album's finish in Dream, tribal, mesmerizing and speedy ethereal dance.

Mirny Mine - Live at Visby Cathedral (2020 PL

Niezbyt lubię płyty z zapisem koncertów live (ze względu na jakość dźwięku, co tu kryć) i nigdy dotąd żadna nie pojawiła się na tym blogu. Jednak inaczej jest z tak gotycko-wrażliwymi artystami robiącymi koncerty w kościołach. Inaczej jest z artystami, którzy sami porównują się do Anny von Hausswolff. A więc i z Mirny Mine, która wydała niedawno album Live at Visby Cathedral.

Właśnie koncert w katedrze, w dodatku w towarzystwie chóru z Visby najlepiej pasuje do takiej muzyki. Mirny Mine, a właściwie Anna Sundström, podobnie jak swoja bardziej znana koleżanka ze Szwecji, tworzy natchniony, gotycki i mroczny pop, prawdziwą "kinematograficzną podróż w mroczniejsze regiony dream popu". Wszystko jest tutaj bardzo mroczne, przesiąknięte skandynawską estetyką, wokal artystki czasem brzmi jak niepokojący szept (piękny w Wolf), czasem melorecytujący, czasem dobitnie i majestatycznie.

Na płaszczyźnie muzycznej dominują monumentalne uderzenia perkusji brzmiące bardziej jak kotły wybijające stabilne, niespieszne tempo. Poza tym mamy gitary okazjonalnie bardziej rzężące. Wszystko jest trochę inne w zamykającym album Dream, tribalowym, wciągajacym i szybkim eterycznym tańcu..

In2Elements - Cycles (2020) PL

In2Element to solowy projekt Adama Szopy, który rozrósł się do tercetu dzięki przyjściu Krzysztofa Rutki (z krakowskiego Transmission Zero) i Michała Szendzielorza (Gallileous). W takim składzie artyści nagrali wydany bardzo niedawno album Cycles.

Wydaje mi się, że wiele w muzyce zespołu zostało z ducha solowego post-rocka. Przede wszystkim budowanie kompozycji w dużym stopniu w oparciu o dźwięki zadziornej, dobrze słyszalnej gitary prowadzącej. Tutaj sprawdza się to wyjątkowo dobrze, a motyw przewodni inspirowany irytującym owadem w Circadian Rhythm (wiem, że chodzi o rytm dobowy, ale czy to nie brzmi jak rytm wygrywany przez cykady?) jest znakomicie wciągający.  

Do tego dochodzą czytelne progresywne i metalowe inspiracje (Vicious Circle!) i kilka intrygujących zagrywek. Solidny, bardzo gitarowy, bardzo riffowy album stawiający bardziej na progresywne tupnięcie niż wygenerowaną atmosferę.

In2Elements - Cycles (2020) EN

In2Element is a solo project by Adam Szopa, that grew up to a trio when welcomed Krzysztof Rutka (known from the Kraków's Transmission Zero) and Michał Szendzielorz (Gallileous) aboard. With this line-up, the artists released recently an album called Cycles.

I think there's still a lot of the solo post-rock vibes left in the band's music. First of all, the compositions are often built on the sound of the very clearly-heard, pugnacious lead guitar. Here this is legitimately good and the insect-inspired leit-motif in Circadian Rhythm (I know it's an astronomical term, but doesn't it sound like a cicada rhythm?) is perfectly engaging.

And then there are also the clear progressive and metal influences (Vicious Circle!) and some intriguing solutions. Solid, very guitar- and riff-oriented album that is more about the hit than generating a mood atmosphere.

VIM - Waiting (2020) EN

The Australian dream pop band VIM caught my attention with the Waiting single. So it shouldn't be a surprise that they appear on my blog with the release of the EP entitled exactly the same.

The quartet make a chilled out and laid-back airy twee pop. Their music consists of swift melodies and relaxing compositions combined with the airy, ethereal vocals by Nat Chippy. This never-hurried pop is well fitted to the convention of dream pop but the element of twee pop is undeniable - the quality of the sound doesn't matter, what matters is the joy and pleasure brought by the sole fact of making music.

An exception here is the last song called Krautro. It's the only one lasting well over the standard pop song time and it ends with a beautiful finish made of mesmerizing and psychedelic guitars.
