Post-rock genius can be born anywhere in the world, no wonder that coming from Kumanovo in Macedonia four musicians looking up to MONO, Explosions In The Sky or God Is An Astronaut created something as good as "There Were Heroes Amongst Us". Post-rock of the highest quality, period.
The album is a tribute to forgotten heroes, people who did great things with only their courage as a tool and yet, they got lost in the history river. And so, the band honours soldiers ("Currahee"), explorers (the crew of the "Chelyuskin" steamboat) and seamen ("Ode to Edwin J. Hill"). Really consistent idea.
Musically speaking, the album combines powerful guitars with extremely moody piano, the band is not afraid to jump to and from those ambiances (as they do in the first track) or to build the songs on really distinct bass line ("Narwahl"). One of the best parts is also the loud finish of "Ode to..." ended with a beat that is so close to every human being. It's clear that the album is filled with love for life and for courage that is employed in crisis situations.
"There Were Heroes Amongst Us" costs 6 USD.
