The married couple duo of Jane and Andrew Craig from around Brighton makes their music as Dreams of Empire. Already their previous album, Nothing's Really Finished, was close to appearing on this blog but with the release of Encapsulation, I couldn't overlook their charming and shoegazing indie pop.
The album, kept in the lo-fi airy rock style, underlines the ease the musicians have when writing their compositions. Quick-paced, go-ahead guitars and obligatory, space-filling synths plus the withdrawn but very much pop-like vocals by Jane. Shoegaze and the ethereality of dream pop are here more inspirations than actual genre, this album is ruled by casual melodies and light songs. And this is what is approved not only by the audience, after all the album was mixed by Steve Whitfield known from the Cure and Pale Saints.
This second album is closely tied to the pandemics and lockdown that were not only an excuse to spend time on making music but in fact were sort of muses as the songs are about "paranoia about personal space, missing loved ones, and lost opportunity", probably there's gonna be more albums like this.
Encapsulation costs 6 GBP.
