One of the best albums of this year. And definitely also leading the most suitable album titles of 2016. In violet's music is a guitar-electronic amber - dense and beautiful like honey but also filled with sorrow, like a real amber that can be a death trap for some poor insects.
"in violet is a musical project marrying the worlds of the experimental with the conventional" as they describe themselves on Bandcamp but there is not that much of the traditional. Maybe the vocals which sometimes sound like they could go as well with an acoustic guitar and come-hither looks of female fans. There is more of the weird.
Hearts move with the beats, soul jiggling with the lyrics. You can feel it from the very first sounds of the album but after a short softening in "Salome" it reaches peak around "amber" that sounds like a disco for people with broken hearts - dark but also hot, sensual and full of emotions. But it's not the end, it's merely the beginning. The waves of music go on until the climax in "Poseidon Weeps" after which it turns into drone-like "Sagazan". What about the lyrics? It is a strange mixture of mythological references with very personal existential conclusions. A peculiar mixture, just like the whole music by in violet. One word to sum it up - delirium.
