Who of us would think that Toronto, the city in Canada, could be an annoying moloch? That anything in Canada could? But it does. "Toronto has a way of wearing people down. With the constant noise, hustle and hurry there leaves little room for quiet reflection", the antidote for this is the first LP by Canadian artist Lisa Marie Kruchak - "Miles of Prairie".
You can hear here horses galloping through the prairie, groves that are being passed by and the pace of blood. The escape into the dark, like the dark sky above the fire, folk, escape from loneliness, loss and betrayal. Or maybe "escape" is not the word to use here? It does sound more like this night ride through the prairie and contemplation over those feelings. There's no escape from them but perhaps you can wrap your mind around them? The atmosphere of the album is done by the guitar with veeery heavy strings, the sound of which makes you almost feel how resistant they are under the fingers. It is balanced by surprisingly catchy melodies ("Without Losin") and choirs ("Sometimes") and deepen by distortions ("Lonely Heart"). Kruchak, as the Polish-like surname as well as her pictures suggest, is the black raven within the snowy landscape looking at the frozen feelings with eyes full of black wisdom.
"Miles of Prairie" was recorded in Slaughterhouse 754, it costs 10 CAD.
