Music is fantastic. Alongside many obvious reasons supporting this claim, there is also a widely used one - about promoting less known cultures. nêhiyawak is a perfect example in favour of this cliche statement. Written as ᓀᐦᐃᔭᐊᐧᐠ, pronounced asneh-Hee-o-wuk (emphasis on 2nd syllable) and describing the Cree people, people of lowlands. It's made of three artists of indigenous decent - Kris Harper, Matthew Cardinal, and Marek Tyler and tells, obviously, stories about their history. It's really a shame they don't sing in Cree though.
The vocal of the band of Edmonton (or rather from amiskwacîwâskahikan) makes me think of Americana genre and artists like Decemberists but it's different musically. Rhythmical on one hand and moody and mystical on the other. It's because of guitar backgrounds and a pinch of electronics. In "Starlight" there are also epic drums and wonderfully enriched vocal. The compositions are created with grace, they're far away from pop-ish indie rock, definitely forcing to sacrifice a moment to listen into them.
The EP costs only 2 CAD.
