The Black Zebra - Nonsquare (2017) EN

To continue about black animals, today zebras. Not many species is so strongly connected to their colours as zebras, up to the point that a black zebra wouldn’t be consider a zebra at all. I’m not sure if it’s relevant but paradoxical it is. This zebra is the project by the Machado brothers of the beautiful Porto, who had an urge to create something tangible, something that could help them express themselves. From scratch and by themselves only.

From the very beginning, the album sounds dark and moody. You can hardly not imagine a dim stage with smoke everywhere and guitar sounds floating the hypnotized audience. From time to time we are being surprised by a rapid pacing up (“Destemido”) or almost happy sounds drastically changing into an unsettling composition with military recordings in the background (“Pandora”). And there is also “Children” with changing pace and surprising chanting in the middle. Good piece of solid, Portuguese post-rock.
